How team driving works

Two drivers share one truck and take turns: one drives while the other rests in the sleeper berth. Because the truck can keep moving almost around the clock within each driver's hours-of-service limits, teams cover long distances fast, which is why customers pay a premium for team freight.

Pay

Team pay is usually a per-mile rate split between the two drivers, or a rate per driver. The total miles are high, so weekly pay per driver is often higher than solo OTR. Ask how the split works and what happens if your co-driver leaves.

Things to think about

  • Your partner matters. Many teams are couples or friends. Some carriers match drivers.
  • Sleep while moving takes getting used to.
  • Home time is often scheduled together.

Looking for a partner? Some carriers help match team drivers. Ask the recruiter.

Questions drivers ask

Do team drivers make more money?

Teams usually run far more miles than solo drivers, so weekly pay per driver is often higher, but it depends on the split and the freight.

Can I team drive with my spouse?

Yes, many teams are couples. Both of you need a CDL-A and must meet the carrier's requirements.
