What flatbed work is
Flatbed drivers haul open-deck freight like steel, lumber, pipe, machinery and building materials. The difference from van work is securement: you chain, strap and often tarp every load yourself, following federal cargo securement rules.
The physical side
Throwing straps and chains, handling tarps that can weigh well over 100 pounds, and climbing on the deck in all weather are part of the job. Many drivers love the variety and the work; it's not for everyone.
Pay
Flatbed often pays more than dry van, through a higher per-mile rate, percentage pay, or extras like tarp pay. Ask how tarping and extra stops are paid.
Experience and training
Some flatbed carriers hire recent graduates and teach securement; others want flatbed experience. Training on securement and tarping is worth asking about either way.
Questions drivers ask
Does flatbed pay more than dry van?
Often, yes, because the work is more physical and skilled. Many carriers add tarp pay. Compare the full package, including miles and home time.
Can new drivers do flatbed?
Some carriers train new CDL holders for flatbed, including securement and tarping. Others require experience. Check the listing.
