Yes, carriers hire new drivers
Plenty of carriers hire recent CDL-A graduates, usually for OTR or regional work at first, with a period of training with an experienced driver before you go solo. A year of safe driving opens many more doors after that.
What to look for in a first job
- Training: how long with a trainer, team or solo, and how you're paid during it.
- Equipment and support: newer trucks, a dispatcher who answers, a safety department that helps.
- Contracts: if the carrier paid for your school, know the payback terms if you leave early.
- Home time and miles: ask for averages for first-year drivers, not top drivers.
Before you apply
Have your CDL, medical certificate (now electronic, see our med card guide), driving record and work history ready. Brush up on hours of service and what to do after a crash; recruiters and road-test examiners ask.
Questions drivers ask
Can I get a CDL-A job with no experience?
Yes. Many carriers hire recent graduates and train them with an experienced driver first. Expect OTR or regional work to start.
How old do I have to be to drive across state lines?
Generally 21 for interstate commercial driving. Many states allow drivers 18 to 20 to drive within the state only.
