Breakdown Pay, Layover Pay and Guarantees: The Pay That Isn't Miles

Experienced Drivers Oct 17, 2026 2 min read

Four days in the shop can mean four days with no paycheck. What company drivers should ask a new carrier about breakdown, layover, detention, guaranteed pay and benefits.

In our cab talk (video above), Mike's truck sat in a dealer shop for four days, and he didn't make a dime. Carla's answer: that's the first question for the next carrier. Cents per mile is only part of a company driver's pay. Compare what you take home for the week, and the hours it takes to earn it.

Breakdown and layover pay

  • What do you pay me while the truck is down? A daily amount, an hourly rate, a hotel - or nothing?
  • When does it start? After a few hours, the first day, the second?
  • Layover: what if you sit waiting for a load or a reload?
  • The truck itself: what year, who fixes it (their shop or a dealer), and is there a spare while yours is down? Their own shop and a spare truck keep you earning.

Detention and stop pay

  • When does the detention clock start, what does it pay, and what proof do they need? Some carriers start after two hours; some pay only if the customer pays them.
  • Stop pay, unloading pay, short-run minimums. Ask for the full pay sheet.
  • More in detention pay: get it in writing.

Guaranteed weekly pay

A guarantee helps in a slow week - read what voids it: turning down a load, taking home time, not being available enough days. Some guarantees disappear in the very week you'd need one.

Benefits

  • Your share of health insurance, and when coverage starts (some carriers make you wait 60-90 days).
  • Paid time off and retirement match.
  • A hypothetical: if new premiums cost you $80 a week more, that's like losing several cents per mile on a 2,500-mile week.

Put it together

Line the offers up side by side: realistic weekly miles for a new driver on that account x the rate, plus the pay that isn't miles, minus your benefit costs - and the hours on duty it takes. That's the number to compare. The full checklist is in how to switch trucking companies the right way.

General information, not legal advice. Pay examples are hypothetical; policies vary by carrier - get them in writing.

Questions drivers ask

Do carriers pay drivers when the truck breaks down?

Some do and some don't. Policies range from a daily breakdown amount plus a hotel to nothing at all. Ask what they pay while the truck is down, when it starts, and get it in writing.

What usually voids a guaranteed weekly minimum?

It depends on the carrier. Common conditions include turning down a load, taking home time that week, or not being available for a set number of days. Read the conditions before you count on it.

Why do benefits matter when comparing offers?

Your share of health insurance comes out of every check. If the new premiums cost you $80 a week more, that wipes out a lot of cents per mile. Compare the premium, the waiting period, paid time off and retirement match.
